How to improve your CRS score
A plain look at how to increase your CRS score under the current IRCC rules, and where I would not spend the money.

Start with the score you have
People ask me how to improve a CRS score, and how to increase a CRS score, as if there is a hidden lever. There is not. IRCC publishes the grid. A profile gets points for age, education, language, work, and a few extras. Express Entry covers the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program, plus provincial nominations that come through the system. Quebec selects its own skilled workers. If you are not eligible for a program, a higher score does not put you in the pool.
Put your facts into the CRS score calculator before you pay for a test. Change one fact at a time. I reviewed the official pages on October 15, 2026. If this page and IRCC ever disagree, use the sources at the bottom.
Retest your language, and aim for CLB 9
Language is the factor I look at first. Points jump when you cross a Canadian Language Benchmark, not when you improve a little inside the same level.
Without a spouse, each first-official-language ability is worth 17 points at CLB 7, 23 at CLB 8, and 31 at CLB 9. CLB 10 or higher is 34. With a spouse accompanying you, those steps are 16, 22, 29, and 32. Four abilities moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 are 32 points on the single grid. All four moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 are 56. Transferability needs CLB 9 in every ability, not an average. A master's degree with language goes from 25 to 50 at that line. Three or more years of foreign skilled work does the same. A bachelor's degree on its own goes from 13 to 25. One weak skill blocks it.
Use IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core. IELTS Academic and CELPIP-General LS do not count for Express Entry. On the current IRCC chart, IELTS General Training reaches CLB 9 at listening 8.0, and at 7.0 in reading, writing, and speaking. Listening 7.5 is still CLB 8. Results must be less than two years old when you submit the profile and when you apply after an invitation. Confirm the chart on IRCC's language testing page before you book.
Add French if you can reach NCLC 7
You need NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities. One ability at NCLC 6 means no bonus. It is 50 additional points if your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities, and 25 if your English is CLB 4 or lower in every ability or you have no English test. Mixed English can be neither. As a second language, CLB 9 is also 6 points per ability, capped at 24 without a spouse or 22 with one. If French is your first official language, the large core points move to those scores.
The test is TEF Canada or TCF Canada, and it has to be less than two years old. NCLC 7 in all four also meets the French-language category. A category round can invite at a lower cutoff, and you still compete inside the category. If you already speak French, book the test. If you do not, tell me before you plan around a bonus you may not reach.

Get an ECA for every foreign degree
If you studied outside Canada, you need an educational credential assessment for immigration, from an organization IRCC has designated. An assessment for a job, or for admission to a school, is a different product. The report has to be less than five years old when you submit the profile and when you apply. IRCC says it will refuse an application that uses an expired one.
The points follow the Canadian equivalency. Without a spouse, a bachelor's degree or a program of three or more years is 120. Two or more credentials, with at least one program of three or more years, is 128. A master's degree is 135. A doctorate is 150. With a spouse accompanying you, those levels are 112, 119, 126, and 140. Assess each foreign credential you want counted. Architects, doctors, and pharmacists have their own designated bodies. Read IRCC's education assessment page before you pay the wrong organization.
A Canadian credential is extra points, and no ECA
A Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate does not need an assessment. It can set your education level, and a completed Canadian post-secondary credential can add 15 points for one or two years, or 30 points for three years or longer. You get one of those, not both. The school, full-time study, and time in Canada have to meet IRCC's rules. I would count a credential you already finished. I would not start a long program only to chase 15 or 30 points.
Decide whether your spouse is accompanying
If your spouse or common-law partner is not coming, or they are a citizen or permanent resident, IRCC scores you on the higher grid. Core points can reach 500 instead of 460. If they are coming, your own factors are worth a little less, and you may add up to 40 points for them: 10 for education, 20 for language, and 10 for Canadian work. Their foreign education needs its own assessment. CLB 9 or higher in all four of their abilities is 20. One year of their skilled Canadian work is 5.
John Doe is 30, with a bachelor's degree, CLB 9 in all four English abilities, and three years of skilled work outside Canada. No Canadian work, and no French. On the single grid that is 424: age 105, education 120, language 124, and 75 for transferability. If Jane Doe is accompanying and adds nothing, the same facts score 398. That is 26 points gone. If Jane has a master's assessment (10), CLB 9 in all four (20), and one year of skilled Canadian work (5), she adds 35 and the score becomes 433. Run both versions in the calculator. This example is not your file.
Say what is true. If Jane is coming, list her as accompanying. If she is not, say that, and still declare her. I will not help you hide a spouse. If the honest answer leaves you short, I look at her language and her assessment.
Canadian work, and the combinations around it
Without a spouse, skilled Canadian work is 40 points for one year, 53 for two, 64 for three, 72 for four, and 80 for five or more. With a spouse accompanying you, those steps are 35, 46, 56, 63, and 70. IRCC means paid work in Canada, in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3, at least 30 hours a week or the same hours part-time. Remote work counts only if you were physically in Canada. Self-employment does not count, and neither does work you did as a full-time student.
Skill transferability stops at 100. These are the combinations, and the caps:
- Education with language, and education with Canadian work, share a cap of 50. CLB 9 in all four abilities, or a second year of Canadian work, is what moves a master's from 25 to 50. A bachelor's moves from 13 to 25.
- Foreign skilled work with language, and foreign work with Canadian work, share a cap of 50. One or two foreign years is the lower band. Three foreign years or more is the higher one.
- A trade certificate with language is its own factor: 25 points when all four abilities are CLB 5 or higher, and 50 when all four are CLB 7 or higher.
The calculator applies the caps. Do not add the lines by hand and forget them.
A provincial nomination is 600 points
If a province nominates you through an Express Entry stream, and you accept that nomination in your profile, IRCC adds 600 points. That is the largest factor on the grid, and it is not automatic. A nomination outside Express Entry does not drop 600 points onto a federal profile. Province rules change. Some streams want a job or a connection to the province.

If none of them fit, I will say so.
Category-based draws, and job offer points
In a category-based round, IRCC still ranks eligible people by CRS score. On October 15, 2026, IRCC's category page listed French, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians, senior managers, researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits. French needs NCLC 7 in all four. Occupation categories generally need 12 months in one listed occupation in the past three years. Some of that work has to be in Canada. A nearby job title is not enough. Check the rounds of invitations, because the lists move.
Job offer points ended on March 25, 2025, including the old 50 points and the old 200 for senior managers. The CRS criteria page still said that on October 15, 2026. A real offer can still matter for eligibility in the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, and some provincial streams. Do not buy an offer. There are no points to buy. A 2026 IRCC consultation called the removal temporary and asked about points for some high-wage jobs later. That paper is not the grid.
Age timing, and a sibling in Canada
Age points peak from 20 to 29: 110 without a spouse, and 100 if your spouse is accompanying. They fall on later birthdays, and they are zero at 45 or older. You cannot change your date of birth. If a birthday is close, I would update a finished test or a finished assessment before that day. I would not rush a wrong profile to save a few points. After an invitation, the score still has to match the facts you can prove.
A brother or sister in Canada is 15 points. They must be 18 or older, a citizen or a permanent resident, and living in Canada. The sibling can be yours or your accompanying spouse's, and you have to share a parent, including by adoption. Claim it only if it is true.
Estimate the score, then book a phone consultation if you want me to order the steps. It is 15 to 30 minutes. If Express Entry is the wrong path, I will say so.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to increase a CRS score?
There is no single trick. For most people the large moves are a higher language score, especially CLB 9 in all four abilities, French at NCLC 7, a valid education assessment, and skilled Canadian work. A provincial nomination adds 600 points, and it is not open to everyone. Estimate the score before you pay for a new test.
Do job offers still add CRS points?
No. On March 25, 2025, IRCC removed job offer points from the Comprehensive Ranking System, including the old 50 points and the old 200 points for senior managers. The CRS criteria page still said that when I reviewed it on October 15, 2026. A real job offer can still matter for eligibility in some programs. It does not add CRS points today.
Should I list my spouse as accompanying?
Only if your spouse or common-law partner is actually coming with you. If they are not coming, or they are a citizen or permanent resident, IRCC scores you on the higher grid. If they are coming, you use the lower grid and can add up to 40 points for their education, language, and Canadian work. Do not say they are staying behind if they are not.
How many points is French worth?
NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities is 50 additional points when your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities. It is 25 when your English is CLB 4 or lower in every ability, or you have no English test. French can also add second-language points, and it can qualify you for French category rounds. The test has to be TEF Canada or TCF Canada, and less than two years old.
Will a higher CRS score get me an invitation?
No. A higher score improves your rank. IRCC decides who is invited, and the cutoff changes by round. I do not guarantee an invitation, a nomination, or a visa.
