Overview
What is Express Entry
Express Entry is IRCC’s online system for managing applications to certain economic permanent residence programs.
You create a profile, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and may later receive an Invitation to Apply. The system currently manages three main federal programs.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
For skilled workers with foreign work experience who meet education, language, and related eligibility factors.
Canadian Experience Class
For people with qualifying skilled Canadian work experience who want to move to permanent residence.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
For qualified tradespeople who meet the criteria for skilled trades pathways.
Process
How Express Entry works
A simple path from profile to permanent residence application.
Create a profile
Build an Express Entry profile with your education, language results, work history, and other key details.
Receive a CRS score
Your profile gets a Comprehensive Ranking System score based on the information you provide.
Enter the pool
If you meet a program’s minimum requirements, you enter the pool and wait for invitation rounds.
Invitation to Apply (ITA)
IRCC issues ITAs in rounds of invitations. Candidates at or above the cut-off may be invited.
Submit the full application
After an ITA, you prepare and submit a complete permanent residence application with supporting documents.
IRCC also holds category-based invitation rounds for certain occupations, such as healthcare, STEM, trades, and others.
CRS
What affects your CRS score
Your CRS score is based on core human capital factors and, in some cases, additional points. This is a high-level overview only.
Age
Points vary by age band under the CRS.
Education
Highest completed education and, where needed, an ECA.
Language ability
Official language test results in English and/or French.
Work experience
Skilled work experience in Canada and abroad.
Other factors
A job offer, Canadian study, spouse or partner details, or a provincial nomination (which adds 600 CRS points).
A provincial nomination adds 600 points to a CRS score.
